Target problem

Formal schooling in India begins from Grade I. Children do not have exposure to a literacy environment or development of their cognitive skills till the age of 6. According to a recent study by the World Bank, by the time poorer children in many countries reach school age, they are at a significant disadvantage in cognitive and social abilities. Further research conducted by neuroscientists indicates “experience-based brain development in the early years sets neurological and biological pathways that affect health, learning and behaviour throughout life”. Pre-school education is taken for granted by a vast majority of people in Urban India but this service is available to only the rich in rural India who send their children to nearby private schools.

Business details

We set up centres in the remote rural areas where 2 programs are offered: Kindergarten program for children aged 3-6 and an after-school program for Classes 1-5. However, establishing centres and providing services are together not enough to increase access, so we provide these services at very affordable prices. The fees collected go towards the costs of running the centres and the salaries of teachers. The teachers are hired after an elaborate selection process and they go through an intensive 14 days pre-service and 11 days in-service training program. Our curriculum has been uniquely developed so that teachers in rural areas can deliver it with ease. Children are assessed monthly based on our proprietary STEP methodology which tracks their progress against pre-defined and age appropriate learning outcomes. It hopes to expand to 700 learning centres by 2016 serving more than 35,000 children annually and employing more than 2,000 teachers in rural India.
